about jessie

I am the editor of Beacon Broadside, the blogging arm of Beacon Press, a site which I also designed on the Typepad platform. I’m a freelance web designer and book reviewer, and used to be the Assistant Editor of Rain Taxi Review of Books. A native of Norwich, Connecticut, I’ve also lived in the Inwood neighborhood of Manhattan, Hastings-on-Hudson, NY, and Saint Paul, MN. My spouse Steve, our son Nathan (whose cuteness dominates this blog), our three cats (two of whom can be seen here), and I now live in the west suburbs of metro Boston.

My web skills include CSS, HTML, XHTML, CFML, some JavaScript, Java, and CGI, and I am totally comfortable working with Photoshop, InDesign, and just about any office application. I am the webmaster for accommodatingly.com, and designed the site on a Wordpress platform. I also designed sites for Ruminator (also Wordpress), the Macalester College English Department, Rain Taxi, the writer Diane Glancy, and the Women’s Hoops Blog. I’ve also tried my had at print design, producing Steve’s latest chapbook, Shot Clocks (Harry Tankoos Books, 2006).

I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Theatre Arts from the University of Minnesota, where I designed costumes for several productions, among them Black Comedy, A Woyzeck Performance, The Red Horse Animation, and The Rehearsal. I was Co-Costume Designer, with Mathew J. LeFebvre, of the Guthrie Theater/ University of Minnesota BFA Actor Program production of Maxim Gorky’s The Summer People. I was Assistant Costume Designer on Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for the Minnesota Centennial Showboat, and Much Ado About Nothing and The Skriker for the University of Minnesota Mainstage.

In past incarnations, I was a record store clerk, actress, director, bank teller, commercial loan advisor, college radio disc jockey, administrative assistant, corporate branding consultant/dog walker, computer specialist, and archaeology lab technician. My visual art is featured on the cover of Steve Burt’s first book, Popular Music. I’m a lapsed Unitarian, a Pisces, and far too fond of baked goods. Email me if you have any questions (remember to remove NOSPAM from the address).
