About Steve
I teach in the English Department at Harvard. From 2000 to 2007 I taught at Macalester College in Saint Paul. Jessie and I have one beautiful son and three cats. I write books about poetry, essays on other people’s poems, books of my own poems, and shorter pieces about poems, poets, poetry, comics, science-fiction writers, political controversies, obscure pop groups, and the WNBA, some of which you can find on this site (under “books by steve” and “steve’s writing elsewhere”).
I lived in Montgomery County, Maryland during grade school and middle school, and in Washington, DC in high school. I am a product of this high school, and this college and of this graduate program, all of which treated me exceptionally well. In between the last two I spent a year here. I am also a product of this radio program, and of this magazine. Other influences: William Empson; Sarah Records. Also influenced by lots of people I know personally, most of whom are linked on this site: poke around and you’ll find them.
